A Note From Kitt
Thank you for reading Becoming Liz.
Elizabeth Rutland came to me as a woman who had learned how to survive by becoming dependable, composed, and difficult to disrupt. She built a life around control because control felt safer than uncertainty. Safer than memory. Safer than vulnerability.
But survival and selfhood are not always the same thing.
At its heart, Becoming Liz is a story about identity, emotional inheritance, memory, reinvention, and the quiet ways people lose themselves while trying to protect themselves.
It is also a story deeply rooted in Black womanhood, family, ambition, community, longing, grief, intimacy, and becoming.
My hope is that readers see parts of themselves somewhere inside Elizabeth’s journey.
Not necessarily in her choices.
But in the tension between who we become to survive and who we might have been otherwise.
